Top 5 Films of 2007

Monday, 05 February 2007. .

Due to a somewhat dry period in my ideas for what to write, I wanted to let you know of my Top 5 Films of 2007. In no particular order:

Hot Fuzz

A British police action film written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost... This film will be the best British film since Shaun of the Dead. No, really, that's it. No further comments necessary, I have that much faith in this team. Release date for the UK is 16th February 2007. Review

Ratatouille

Cars came and went, and I don't really think it has the lasting value that Finding Nemo or The Incredibles had. Maybe John Lasseter has caught the George Lucus bug? You know, produce films = success, direct films = not so good. Anyway, Ratatouille is from Brad Bird who directed The Incredibles, so expect good things. Release date for the UK is 27th July 2007.

Sin City 2

The first one was amazing beyond belief, and oozed sheer creative style. Sin City 2, has only to do the same thing again, only more-so. The plot suggests that there will be plenty more of Jessica Alba, (good thing), and Rachel Weisz as the classic femme fatale. Release date for the UK is 21st September 2007.

The Simpsons Movie

Ok, so I really like Family Guy, but The Simpsons are still animated gods and a movie version will no doubt hit the top spot worldwide due to its 17 year history of never having a truly dud episode. Release date for the UK is 27th July 2007. Review

300

From comic book bloke Frank Miller, (Sin City: see above), comes the tale of Spartan King Leonidas and 300 Spartans beating the crap out of the massive Persian army. Very loosely based on the famous Battle of Thermopylae which took place in the summer of 480 BC. The trailer looks cool, but I really can't see the girlfriend agreeing to see this one with me... she has a limited tollerence of dismembered limbs in movies... this one will no doubt bring a whole new meaning to the phrase "river of blood".

Moving on, we come to the film I am secretly most pleased about.

Rush Hour 3

Sorry, but I loved the first two, and this will no doubt provide me with the same: cheesy crap, Chris Tucker's huge flapping mouth, and Jackie Chan kicking plenty of bad guys, whilst wondering about where his career is going.

I've also decided on the DVD I will be buying no matter the price:

Pan's Labyrinth

Mark Kermode, labelled Pan's Labyrinth as the best film of 2006, describing it as "an epic, poetic vision in which the grim realities of war are matched and mirrored by a descent into an underworld populated by fearsomely beautiful monsters." He tends to get excited and/or cross about the same things as me, so I am going to trust him on this one. Review

Finally, this is an interesting turn of events:

Hitman

Based on the video game series I've played a couple of them. The soundtrack to the game is generally better than the game itself. Personally, I think this one will either go the way as the Splinter Cell movie, and never get off the ground, or it will follow the way all "movies based on computer games" end up and suck big time. Doom, and Super Mario Bros are a testiment to good games and bad movies.
